The growth of silicon wafer shipments may slow down next year, and the next year is expected to rebound and hit a high

2022-11-09

On the 7th local time, the International Semiconductor Industry Association (SEMI) estimated in the latest report that the global semiconductor silicon wafer shipment area will reach 14.694 billion square inches this year, an increase of 4.8% over last year and a new high.
The agency pointed out that the growth of silicon wafer shipments may slow down in 2023, but it will rebound in 2024 and shipments will hit a new high.

Due to the challenging overall economic conditions, the growth of semiconductor silicon wafer shipment area in 2023 is likely to slow down to about 14.6 billion square inches, a slight decrease of 0.6% from this year.
SEMI expects that due to the challenging overall economic conditions, the growth of semiconductor silicon wafer shipment area in 2023 may slow down to about 14.6 billion square inches, a slight decrease of 0.6% from this year.
Affected by factors such as inflation and interest rate hikes, the market demand for personal computers and smartphones is weak, and the inventory problem in the industry chain is serious. TSMC expects that the output value of the global semiconductor industry may face a recession next year. UMC also expects that the output value of the wafer foundry industry will grow negatively next year.
SEMI expects that, driven by strong demand for semiconductors in data center, automotive and industrial applications, the area of semiconductor silicon wafer shipments will rebound in the next few years, and is expected to increase by 6.5% in 2024 to 15.555 billion square inches in 2025. A further 6% increase to a further 16.49 billion square inches.
